7-day mourning for Manmohan Singh; Ex-PM's last rites on Saturday
A red plastic “love” symbol from an LED board near Circuit House in Siuri was reported stolen. The board, part of a Siuri Municipality installation, displayed the phrase “My Loving Siuri.” Municipality Chairman Ujjal Chattopadhyay filed a complaint, leading police to launch an investigation. Police identified the suspect as Bapan Badyakar, a resident of Mohammadbazar in Birbhum.
During questioning, Badyakar admitted to stealing the love symbol, stating that he intended it as a gift for his wife. However, the symbol broke before he could present it. Upon hearing the circumstances, Chairman Chattopadhyay and the police took a compassionate approach. The chairman purchased a bouquet of roses for Badyakar, who presented it to his wife outside the police station.
His wife, informed of the incident, was present at the scene. The police released Badyakar after he signed a written statement pledging not to engage in theft again. Chairman Chattopadhyay remarked on the rare incident, saying, “I have never seen someone steal out of love before. The young man has vowed never to steal again.”
